It seems that due to “Superman” and Krypto, dog adoption requests and interest increased 500%. There is rising concern that adoptions could lead to disaster.
According to the adoption app Woofz dog adoption interest has surged,
“Google searches for “adopt a dog near me” jumped by +513% after the premiere weekend, and “rescue dog adoption near me” rose by +163%. Searches for “adopt a puppy” also increased by +31%.
Moreover, searches for “adopt a schnauzer” are up +299%, as Krypto appears to be a mix between a terrier mutt and a Schnauzer.”
This is good and bad.
While we are happy to see more interest in pet adoption, the reality is not so great.
Many will want to adopt due to the movie, but dog ownership is more involved and requires long-term commitment and love. Adopting a dog based on a cultural blip or whim is not recommended.
Did you want the movie? Krypto is a menace. James Gunn admits he based the superdog on his rescue dog, Ozu, whom he admits is difficult.
Woofz CEO, Natalia Shahmetova, put out a statement saying,
“adoption is a real commitment. The hype will fade, but your dog will stay, so make sure you’re ready to give them the time, care, and training they need and deserve.”
Pet ownership is not something to be decided based on a film.
If you are interested in adoption, but you are not 100% sure you can commit to taking care of the pet for its entire life, consider volunteering.
Many shelters need volunteers to help walk dogs, socialize pets, feed, clean up, etc. Some shelters even have programs that allow people to take a dog out for the day. This gives the pups a break from the shelter while allowing a prospective adopter to get a taste of dog parenting.
You could also donate needed items or money to a shelter. Many shelters rely on donations to stay in operation.
Still interested in a dog and feel you are going to be a furever home?
Consider the dogs that have been at the shelter for a while. Ones that might be overlooked for some reason or another. They may not be the right fit, but they also might be the perfect dog for you.
Ultimately, do NOT adopt if you are unsure and not in it for the lifetime commitment. It is NOT fair to the animal if it is given a home and then dumped off or hurt due to your flighty arse. Sometimes it doesn’t work out for legitimate reasons, but getting a dog based off a movie is not a good enough reason.
Many animals were adopted during the COVID pandemic shutdowns, only to be dumped at shelters when the restrictions lifted.
Do not do that.
If you are still sure you want a pet, please adopt.
